Thyroid Lump

Overview

A thyroid lump, also known as a thyroid nodule, is an abnormal growth within the thyroid gland located at the front of the neck. Thyroid nodules are common and may be single or multiple. Most thyroid lumps are benign (non-cancerous), but a small percentage may represent thyroid cancer. Early evaluation is important to determine the nature of the lump and plan appropriate treatment.

Symptoms

Many thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and detected incidentally. When symptoms occur, they may include:

Visible swelling in the front of the neck
Difficulty swallowing
Hoarseness of voice
Neck discomfort
Breathing difficulty (rare, in large nodules)

If associated with hormonal imbalance:

Weight changes
Palpitations
Heat or cold intolerance

Complications

Enlargement causing pressure symptoms
Hyperthyroidism
Malignancy progression (if cancerous)

Diagnosis

Clinical examination
Thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH)
Ultrasound neck
FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology)
CT scan (for large or retrosternal goiter)

FNAC is the most important test to determine whether the nodule is benign or malignant.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Benign nodules may require observation and regular follow-up or medication if hormonal imbalance is present. Suspicious or malignant nodules require thyroid surgery (partial or total thyroidectomy), radioactive iodine therapy in selected cases, and lifelong thyroid hormone replacement if total thyroidectomy is performed.
