Gallbladder Stones

Gallbladder Stones

Overview

Gallbladder stones, medically known as cholelithiasis, are hardened deposits that form inside the gallbladder — a small organ located beneath the liver. These stones develop when bile (a digestive fluid) contains excessive cholesterol, bilirubin, or when the gallbladder does not empty properly. Gallstones may vary in size from tiny grains to large stones and can be single or multiple.

Causes

  • Excess cholesterol in bile
  • Increased bilirubin levels
  • Poor gallbladder emptying
  • Obesity or rapid weight loss
  • Diabetes
  • High-fat diet
  • Family history

Symptoms

Many patients may remain asymptomatic. However, when stones block the bile duct, symptoms may include:

  • Sudden severe pain in the upper right abdomen
  • Pain radiating to the back or right shoulder
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion and bloating
  • Fever (in case of infection)
  • Jaundice (if bile duct obstruction occurs)

Biliary colic: This painful episode is known as biliary colic.

Complications

  • Acute cholecystitis (infection of the gallbladder)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Obstructive jaundice
  • Bile duct infection (cholangitis)

Diagnosis

  • Ultrasound of the abdomen (most common and effective test)
  • Blood tests
  • CT scan or MRI in complicated cases

Treatment

✔ Conservative Management (if no symptoms)
✔ Surgical Treatment – Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

If the stones are not causing symptoms, treatment may not be immediately required. The definitive treatment for symptomatic gallstones is laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). It is a minimally invasive procedure performed through small incisions, offering less pain, minimal scarring, faster recovery, and a short hospital stay. In complicated cases, open surgery may be required.

Conclusion

Gallbladder stones are a common surgical condition that can range from mild discomfort to serious complications. Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention ensure safe and effective treatment with excellent long-term outcomes.
