Gallbladder Stones

Pancreatitis

Overview

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas — a vital organ located behind the stomach that plays an important role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. The condition may be acute (sudden onset) or chronic (long-standing inflammation). Pancreatitis can range from mild and self-limiting to severe and life-threatening, requiring intensive medical and sometimes surgical care.

Causes

  • Gallstones (most common cause of acute pancreatitis)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • High triglyceride levels
  • Abdominal trauma
  • Certain medications
  • Infections
  • Post-surgical complications
  • Idiopathic (unknown cause)

Symptoms

  • Severe upper abdominal pain (often radiating to the back)
  • Pain worsening after meals
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Abdominal tenderness
  • Bloating

Severe cases: Low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, and organ dysfunction may occur.

Complications

  • Pancreatic necrosis
  • Abscess formation
  • Pseudocyst
  • Organ failure
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Diabetes mellitus

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests (elevated serum amylase and lipase)
  • Ultrasound abdomen
  • CT scan abdomen (to assess severity)
  • MRI or MRCP (in selected cases)

Treatment

✔ Medical Management
✔ Surgical / Interventional Treatment (if required)

Most cases are treated conservatively with hospital admission, intravenous fluids, pain control, fasting to rest the pancreas, nutritional support, and treatment of the underlying cause. Surgical or interventional treatment is required in cases such as gallstone-related pancreatitis (may require gallbladder removal), pancreatic abscess, necrosis, or persistent complications.

Conclusion

Pancreatitis is a potentially serious condition requiring prompt diagnosis and appropriate management. Early treatment and addressing the underlying cause significantly improve outcomes and reduce complications.
