Inguinal Hernia

Overview

An inguinal hernia occurs when a portion of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal wall, specifically in the groin region. It is one of the most common types of hernia and occurs more frequently in men than in women. Inguinal hernias may develop gradually over time due to muscle weakness or suddenly due to increased abdominal pressure.

Causes

  • Weakness in the abdominal wall
  • Heavy lifting
  • Chronic cough
  • Constipation and straining during bowel movements
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Family history

Symptoms

  • Visible or palpable bulge in the groin area
  • Pain or discomfort while bending, lifting, or coughing
  • Heaviness or dragging sensation in the groin
  • Burning or aching sensation at the bulge
  • Swelling around the testicles (in men)

Severe condition: In severe cases, if the hernia becomes strangulated (blood supply cut off), symptoms may include severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and bowel obstruction — requiring emergency surgery.

Complications

  • Incarceration (hernia gets stuck)
  • Strangulation (cut-off blood supply)
  • Intestinal obstruction

Diagnosis

  • Clinical physical examination
  • Ultrasound (if needed)
  • CT scan in complex cases

Most inguinal hernias are diagnosed through physical examination.

Treatment

✔ Surgical Repair (Definitive Treatment)
✔ Open Hernia Repair
✔ Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Surgery is the only permanent treatment for inguinal hernia. In open hernia repair, a small incision is made, and the weak area is reinforced with mesh. In laparoscopic hernia repair, a minimally invasive approach is used with small incisions and a camera, offering less pain, faster recovery, early return to work, and minimal scarring.

Conclusion

Inguinal hernia is a common but treatable surgical condition. Early surgical repair prevents serious complications and ensures a safe and quick recovery with excellent long-term results.
