Dermoid Cyst

Overview

A dermoid cyst is a benign (non-cancerous) growth that develops from embryonic cells and can contain tissues such as hair, skin, or fat. It can occur anywhere in the body but is commonly found on the face, neck, or ovaries. These cysts grow slowly and are usually present from birth, although they may be noticed later in life.

Causes

  • Congenital condition (present from birth)
  • Trapped embryonic tissue during development
  • Abnormal cell growth

Symptoms

  • Painless lump under the skin
  • Slow-growing swelling
  • Firm or rubbery texture
  • May become painful if infected

Note: Symptoms depend on the location and size of the cyst.

Complications

  • Infection
  • Rupture of the cyst
  • Pressure on nearby structures
  • Rare risk of malignancy

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan or MRI (for deeper cysts)

Treatment

✔ Surgical Excision (Definitive Treatment)

Dermoid cysts are usually treated with complete surgical removal to prevent complications and recurrence. The procedure is safe and effective, with minimal chances of the cyst returning if fully excised.

Conclusion

Dermoid cysts are benign and slow-growing conditions that can be effectively treated with surgery. Early diagnosis and proper management ensure good outcomes.
