Breast Lump

Overview

A breast lump refers to any abnormal mass or swelling in the breast tissue. While many breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous), such as fibroadenomas or cysts, some may represent breast cancer (carcinoma breast). Early evaluation of any breast lump is essential to determine its nature and ensure timely treatment if required.

Causes

  • Fibroadenoma (common in young women)
  • Breast cyst
  • Infection (mastitis or abscess)
  • Hormonal changes
  • Fat necrosis
  • Breast carcinoma

Although many lumps are benign, any persistent or suspicious lump must be properly investigated.

Symptoms

  • Palpable lump in the breast or underarm
  • Change in breast size or shape
  • Skin dimpling or puckering
  • Nipple discharge (especially bloody discharge)
  • Nipple retraction
  • Persistent breast pain

Warning signs: Hard, irregular, painless lumps with skin or nipple changes may indicate carcinoma breast.

Complications

  • Progression of undiagnosed breast cancer
  • Spread of cancer to lymph nodes or other organs
  • Infection (in abscess cases)

Diagnosis

  • Clinical breast examination
  • Ultrasound (especially in younger women)
  • Mammography
  • FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology)
  • Core needle biopsy (for definitive diagnosis)

The “Triple Assessment” approach (clinical exam, imaging, and biopsy) is considered the gold standard.

Treatment

✔ Benign Lumps – Observation or Surgical Excision
✔ Carcinoma Breast – Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Hormonal & Targeted Therapy

Treatment depends on whether the lump is benign or malignant. Benign lumps may only require observation or surgical removal if symptomatic. Carcinoma breast treatment may include surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy), sentinel lymph node biopsy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapy. Management is usually multidisciplinary for optimal outcomes.

Conclusion

A breast lump should never be ignored. While many are benign, prompt medical evaluation ensures early detection of breast cancer and allows timely, effective treatment with excellent long-term outcomes. Early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates and treatment success.
